IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has lauded the peaceful conduct of the ongoing Akwatia by-election.
During a visit to the constituency on September 2, to observe security arrangements, the IGP expressed his contentment with the professionalism of security personnel and the cooperation of voters, noting the calm and orderly nature of the polls.
“Everything is proceeding smoothly, just as we anticipated. This is the kind of environment we aim for, one that ensures a peaceful and seamless election,” Mr. Yohuno stated.
He applauded the commitment of police officers, emphasising that all regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) were actively deployed on the ground to support local personnel.
“I’m very pleased with how my officers have performed. We’ve ensured full deployment of all regional commanders and POMAB members to work side by side with field officers. So far, everything is going according to plan,” he added.
Reaffirming the police’s dedication to maintaining peace during elections, the IGP assured the public that past instances of electoral violence, such as those witnessed in Ablekuma North, would not recur.
“The violence at Ablekuma North is behind us. We’re making progress. This election marks a new standard for how elections should be conducted,” he noted.
The by-election in Akwatia, conducted across 119 polling stations with over 50,000 registered voters, was triggered by the passing of the area’s sitting Member of Parliament. The process has been largely peaceful, with only a few minor incidents reported earlier in the day.
