Sadiq Khan with President Akufo-Addo and Adjei Sowah
The Mayor of Accra, Nii Adjei Sowah, yesterday had the opportunity of meeting his colleague Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
The meeting was to strengthen relations between the cities of Accra and London.
It was all smiles and exchange of pleasantries when the two met on the sidelines of the ongoing 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London, the United Kingdom.
Present were President Akufo-Addo, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and a handful of government officials.
Mr Khan indicated his determination to strengthen relations with certain cities on the continent of Africa, key among which is Accra.
Later in an interview, Nii Adjei Sowah said, “We’re looking at sharing experiences in the area of urban planning; you know the cities are well-planned, despite the issues that they have. They think they can help us with that.
“There are a few thematic areas we’re looking at; one is infrastructure development, the second one is about sanitation, tourism, transportation and sharing experience in the digital space because in Accra we are looking at making the place a smart city.”
The mayors have since committed themselves to meet soon to work out the modalities which would lead to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two sister cities.
“Today’s meeting marks the beginning of that important relationship and we are quite excited that the President of Ghana was also part of it,” elated Adjei Sowah told journalists moments after the meeting.
