Art And Music Education Need More Attention – Pastor

Rev Campbell congratulating some graduands

Rev Dr D.O Bediako-Akoto, coordinating Presbyterian pastor at the Ridge Church, has called for the need to give more attention to the teaching of visual and creative arts and music in schools to reflect national aspirations.

According to him, a lot of emphasis was placed in the teaching and learning of these subjects in the past, which resulted in inculcating a much needed discipline and respect for national aspirations in students.

Addressing guests during the eighth graduation, speech and prize-giving day of staff and pupils of Immanuel Restoration School Complex at Abelemkpe, he opined that music and arts have been proven to serve as conduit for change and inspiration.

“Today, we pride ourselves in the works of Dr Ephraim Amu, Walter Blege, Prof Nketsia, Koo Nimo, among others, who sang inspirational and patriotic songs. These songs inspired listeners to act along nationalist course and in the same spirit today’s generation must follow as expected,” he stated.

He explained that listening or observing an exhibition of art works or music is enough to create love for the protection of nature, the environment, among others, to contribute to community or national development.

“The success of the president’s initiative and campaign for ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ should be seen as revolving around music, the creative and visual arts  to inspire industry players to reason around  creativity and innovation,” Rev Dr Bediako-Akoto stated.

The Presbyterian pastor, who spoke on a number of issues, also called on parents to collaborate with teachers and school management in the running of the school.

He added that they should build the confidence of their children through encouragements.

“In the interest of your children make the teacher your friend and collaborator pay your fees, supervise homework and question where you have doubts,” Rev Dr Bediako-Akoto advised.

Rev Mrs C.A Campbell, director of the school, paid glowing tribute to members of staff for their very exceptional commitment to the affairs of the school.

“Integrity, dedication and devotion to discharge ones duty to the best of abilities is the best policy we must all purse as we move towards the new Ghana agenda, let us hold each other’s hand in this great effort,” she added .
