Otumfuo Osei Tutu II going through the voting process
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cast his votes in this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city.
The revered monarch stormed a polling station at the Palace to exercise his constitutional right at noon when scores of voters had already cast their ballots.
He was accompanied by his wife, Lady Julia Osei Tutu, queen mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and other members of the royal family.
Several security officers were present to ensure law and order.
Voting at the three polling centres at the Palace commenced peacefully a few minutes after 7 am with party agents, officers of the Electoral Commission, and security personnel carrying out their required duties.
A total of 3,019,178 registered voters are expected to vote in 7,100 polling stations across 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
NPP officials are hopeful of winning 85% of the votes that will be cast in the region where it controls 43 out of the 47 seats in Parliament.
However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which manages the remaining four constituencies of Asawase, Ejura Sekeredumasi, New Edubiase, and Sekyere Afram Plains also hopes to snatch some of the seats.
