Tyres being burnt by the angry youth at Asawase

ANGRY YOUTH at Asawase in the Asokore Mampong municipality of the Ashanti Region, on Saturday burnt tyres and chanted war songs to kick against a proposed transport yard in the area.

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly reportedly wanted to temporarily relocate some transport unions at Alabar and the Aboabo lorry parks to the Kenyaogo School park at Asawase.

The temporary relocation was meant to pave way for major rehabilitation works at the Alabar and the Aboabo lorry parks, which are two busy transport stations in the municipality.

But an attempt to work on the Kenyaogo School park in order to pave way for the relocation exercise was met with a protest by the angry youth.

Scores of the youth quickly rushed to the proposed park for the relocation exercise and started chanting war songs, amid threats that they would not allow the project to take place.

They argued that the Kenyaogo park is used by residents of the community, including students of schools in the area, for recreational and sports activities and so they would not agree to the relocation.

They were heard chanting in loud unison, “Baamu Yada, Baamu Yada” – a Hausa expression which literally means that they would not allow the project to take place.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Alidu Seidu, is reported to have accused some influential people in the municipality of influencing the youth to kick against the project.
