The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region has re-opened nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the Ashaiman Constituency following the sudden death of one of the contenders.
But the chance to contest has been opened to only family members of the late Emmanuel Max-Voy, the only competitor who was challenging the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Henry Ernest Norgbey.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party took the decision. The nomination was opened for four days from last Friday August 16, 2019 to Monday, August 19, 2019.
Confirming the decision to DAILY GUIDE, Tony Afenyo, the Ashaiman Constituency chairman of the party, explained that “the decision is NEC’s decision and not the decision of the party…” “This is because the whole thing was pathetic and that is why we decided to open small window for only the deceased family members,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ernest Norgbey has embraced the decision; he believes the new development will dispel the notion that he wants to go unopposed.
Mr. Emmanuel Max-Voy, a parliamentary aspirant for the Ashaiman Constituency, died on Sunday, 4th August 2019 after filing nomination to contest the primaries in the constituency.
He passed away at the Ridge Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Max-Voy was the founder and CEO of Martin Luther King Jr. Co. Ltd.
His death heightened tension in the constituency because supporters of the deceased had accused the incumbent of vowing that he was going unopposed even though Mr. Max-Voy was in the contest until his demise.
