From June next year, homeowners within Ashaiman who do not have toilet facilities will be arraigned before courts to face the full rigours of the law, the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has cautioned.

According to the assembly, building regulations and sanitation bye-laws will be enforced to prosecute every property owner in the area who doesn’t own a toilet facility.

The assembly in an effort to improve sanitation in the municipality has put in place a package of construction of bio-fill toilet facilities in every household without toilets.

Under the sponsorship of the World Bank and Presto Fund, the assembly will pay for half price of the facility, while the beneficiary who signs up for the installation caters for the remaining money.

Ibrahim Baidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman who on Friday sounded the caution during a function to mark this year’s World Toilet Day in Ashaiman dubbed ‘Let Us Talk Sh*t, urged property owners to take advantage of the assembly’s bio-fill toilet facility.

A moving art exhibition debuts will be held in selected communities such as Ashaiman, Nima and Jamestown. The art exhibition is an expression of the views of Ghana’s artistes on the elimination of open defecation.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government & Rural Development, the art exhibition was co-curated by Alliance Francaise Accra and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The MCE bemoaned the circumstance under which some residents put up houses without toilet facilities, with their dependants embarking on a free range or open defecation in the area.

David Duncan, Chief of Wash, UNICEF, mentioned that the objective of the programme was to generate dialogue with communities about issues pertaining to open defecation. According to him, the programme was dubbed ‘Let’s Talk Sh*t’ in a bid to raise awareness about matters relating to open defecation.

He urged the residents to change their perception and attitude about open defecation.

Frederic Dart, Director of Alliance Française, expressed his happiness about his outfit’s partnership with UNICEF and Ministry of Local Government to make Ghana a better place to be.
