Ashanti Region is infamously leading reported cases of neo-natal deaths in the country, it has been announced.
The country’s average figure for neo-natal deaths stands at 27 per 1,000 live births, but Ashanti Region’s figure stands at 47.
Dr. Emmanuel Kojo Tinkorang, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, disclosed this when the Rotary Club of Kumasi presented medical equipment to the Manhyia Government Hospital.
He mentioned infection and prematurity as some of the causes of neo-natal deaths, which occur in children under one month old.
According to Dr. Tinkorang, the Ashanti regional statistics on neo-natal deaths ought to be addressed immediately.
The items presented were as worth GH¢68, 000, and they included an incubator, suction machine, patient trolley and pulse oximeter.
Dr. Tinkorang lauded the Rotary Club of Kumasi for presenting the incubator, saying, “We need incubators to stop neo-natal deaths.”
Ing. Nana Poku Agyeman, the president of the Rotary Club of Kumasi, disclosed that his club has chalked 55 years in Kumasi.
The donation, he explained, formed part of the 55th anniversary of the club.
