Ayawaso Probe: Police Officers Docket For AG

(IGP), David Asante-Apeatu

THE INSPECTOR General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu has indicated that the Ghana Police Service has commenced its own investigation into the conducts of police officers on secondment at National Security who were allegedly part of the shooting incident during the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election.

He said the Police Professional Unit is spearheading the investigation and that after it is done, the dockets would be forwarded to the Attorney General (AG) for advise.

According to him, the Police Service has written to National Security to release police officers deemed to have been part of the shooting for probe.

He indicated that there were 36 police officers on secondment at National Security.

He said in all, he had report that 18 persons were injured on the day of the election which took place on January 31, 2019.

Mr. Asante-Apeatu noted that one person sustained bullet wound in the leg and added that he could not tell the nature of the rest of the injuries because he had not gone through the medical forms of the rest of the victim.

“This investigation is ongoing; we have not completed,” he said when asked whether he had information about the claim that Azorka Boys were brought down from Tamale to Accra during the by-election.

Meanwhile, he observed how difficult it has been for the police to investigate political violence especially at the interparty level because victims and perpetrators are always not forthcoming with information during investigation.

In some cases, he said, when the cases are sent to court, judges rule that they are misdemeanor.
