Berekum Police Chase Grave Looting

The Police in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region are on the heels of some ‘Sakawa’ boys, who reportedly looted graves at a cemetery at Kraaso Nkantanka and made away with skeletons and other ornaments for ritual purposes.

The Assembly member for the area, Ebenezer Yeboah, told DAILY GUIDE in a telephone interview that the ‘Sakawa’ boys looted six graves in the village in a week starting from last Tuesday.

He said the grave looters exposed fresh bodies and made away with some skeletons and gold plated ornaments on the coffins.

Mr Yeboah said the matter had been reported to the police for further investigations.

According to him, members of the community suspect some ‘Sakawa’ boys of perpetrating the crime and had reported them to the police.

He said it would be inappropriate to put out their names in public domain since they were not caught red-handed.

Mr Yeboah said the suspects had angered the chiefs because the traditional leaders in the area give a lot of reverence to the dead, adding that they were doing everything possible to assist the police to arrest the perpetrators.

Some fresh bodies had been exposed so the chiefs are planning to perform rituals at the cemetery to pacify the ancestors in order to prevent any curse in the community, he said.

The assembly man added that some ‘Sakawa’ boys had been operating in Berekum for a very long time.
