Agnes Attakora-Gyan, Principal of Canadian Independent College Ghana (CIC), has indicated that her outfit focuses on helping students to develop and build on their intellectual, ethical, physical and social qualities.
She said the vision of the school is to see each student succeed in the global multidimensional, multicultural and competitive environment in universities and colleges around the world.
Mrs. Attakora-Gyan made these assertions at the graduation ceremony of (CIC), a leading University Preparatory College in Accra recently.
The college, in its eighth year of operation in the country, has two campuses (High School and Primary) in the Airport Residential Area.
The Primary Division houses a Day Care which offers care-services to infants ranging from three months to three years.
The graduates, most of whom will be starting their tertiary education in Canada, were awarded with the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Six of them were awarded with the Ontario Scholars’ Certificates, which is accorded Ontario students who score 80 percent and above in their final-year of high school.
She said teachers ought to learn how to involve students in discussions and not to only present topics and ideas to them to enable students become critical thinkers.
“The whole essence of education is to help people discover their abilities, nurture and use such abilities to help themselves and society at large, such a process begins with the ability to think critically,” Mrs. Attakora-Gyan explained.
Samuel Otopah Ntow, Director of Pre-Tertiary Schools, Ghana Education Service (GES), said that in education if one seeks success and works hard at it, he or she would find it. On the contrary, if one seeks failure, he or she will find it.
He advised the students to show commitment at the tertiary level and not to indulge in lifestyles that would inhibit their progress.
Mr. Ntow further encouraged students to be disciplined with their academic activities and urged them to maintain an enthusiastic spirit.
K. Mercado, Senior Director, Melaleuca Incorporated, USA, the keynote speaker at the function, asked students to be mindful of what freedom entails and encouraged them to focus on the positive and not the negative aspects of freedom.
