There is a kid on Ghana’s dancehall block, and his name is Chameleon.
He has become a sensation and his songs have become ‘street anthems’.
Chameleon commands the streets and even as an underground artiste, he has a following bigger than some main stream acts.
Over the weekend, he was at the Gamashi Bukom Homowo Bash and when he took over the stage, the crowd went crazy.
Organisers of the show gave Chameleon the stage a few minutes before 4:00am when the crowd was tired and had started moving away. But, the moment he started his performance, the crowd regrouped and even became bigger.
It was amazing almost everyone there knew his songs and his performance was simply amazing.
He told NEWS-ONE is real name is Michael Kwame Alowonuga and has been underground since 1998.
“I started in 1998 but professionally from 2010. All these years, I have had challenges with the right management that can push me to the skies. I have had proposals from people who want to manage me but I have been careful because I want to work with people who are very professional and capable of actually managing my talent.
“I did Graphic and Website Designing at IPMC, but I do music full time. I record my own songs, I write my own lyrics, I do everything on my own. I have no one to help me. I have had a couple of people showing interest in my but I want to be very careful in the decisions I make because as someone who has been on the streets for years, I have seen many people rush into signing management contracts and later flop.
“So I am very careful not to make a bad decision. That is what has held me back. But if I get someone who is serious, I would move faster and hit limelight faster. I am a very patient person and I believe in God a lot so I am not in a hurry at all. Stardom is not arrived in a rush,” Chameleon explained.
There are several reports the upcoming super star has a problem with dancehall king, Shatta Wale, but he denied when NEWS-ONE asked him about it.
“I do not have any problem with Shatta Wale. I have known Shatta Wale for a long while, we became friends three months before he released ‘Bandana’ and we have been struggling and working underground for years in and around Korle Gonno.
“I have followed him because of the love I have for him as a brother from Korle Gonno. When he was beefing Samini, I released a lot of tracks to ‘diss’ Samini for him…. He got to the top and a few things changed. But I am cool. I am waiting for God’s time.”
He explained further that “many people do not know who Chameleon is. Many people know my songs but they do not know I am the one. I have worked underground for several years to promote my music. And I am not surprised that when I came on stage, the people regrouped. It is a natural gift.”
