National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
The National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has congratulated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the party’s nationwide electoral process last Saturday.
In a statement signed by his Personal Assistant Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo the Islamic spiritual head said “on behalf of the Muslim Community I send to you a message of congratulation to you Your Excellency the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on your victory in the just ended presidential Primary Election of the New Patriotic Party (NPP.)”
In a fierce contest with four other aspirants, Dr Bawumia was, on Saturday January 31, 2026, elected as the flagbearer of NPP for the Presidential Election 2028.
His Eminence also commends the NPP for a peaceful congress, which, he advises, should be appreciated by members as another opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to internal democracy, constitutional normalcy, and interfaith harmony.
In the words of His Eminence, “the decision of the delegates is a clear manifestation that Ghana is not a theocracy but a democracy beautified by religious pluralism.”
He praises the other contestants who have conceded in the mood of conciliation, unification, and congratulation. “Indeed, they have demonstrated that in a civilized democratic institution such as NPP, approaches to intra-party contests are plural, but the ultimate objective remains singular”, emphasizes the Grand Imam.
His Eminence further hailed the Police and the Electoral Commission for exhibiting transparency, accountability, and objectivity in their roles in the conduct of the primary election.
He reminds Ghanaians about the need for democratic consolidation. “Democracy is a shared responsibility and a civic duty. And when we all play our roles effectively in purist of democratic prosperity, in the end, we will not remember the discomfort of our individual struggles, but the comfort of our collective success”, concludes His Eminence.
