The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) in partnership with Local Government Network (LOGNET) has held a workshop for traditional rulers and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the Adentan Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region.
Addressing participants at the CLGA House at Adjiriganor, Accra recently, Deputy Executive Director for CLGA, Gladys Gillian Naadu Tetteh indicated that the workshop is a platform to sensitize participants on the contents of the revised local Governance Act and other relevant policy guideline documents on planning and budgeting.
She indicated that relevant skills that will be acquired during the workshop will serve as a rich store of knowledge for participants who will in turn pass it on to others in their respective traditional areas.
“The CSOs, on the other hand, will have it as a blue print guiding them in their discourses with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies (MMDAs).”
Giving an overview of the revised Local Government Act 936 of 2016, the Executive Director explained that it is a deliberate programme by government to make local governance participatory and relevant to the people.
“It evolved from government’s intention to consolidate, merge and codify all laws on decentralization,” she added.
The Executive Director stated that government through the revised Act 936 of 2016 has eliminated a number of bottlenecks which obviously has reduced inconveniences in the laws on decentralization.
She further explained that Parliament of Ghana having had a series of debates on the revised Act, passed it to replace Act 462.
The Resource Person, Dr. Eric Oduro Osae took participants through various stages of the Act 2016, Act 936 under various sub-groupings which made the sessions very friendly.
The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) was established in 2014 as an independent, non governmental, non partisan and nonprofit advocacy and research institution.
The Adentan workshop is the seventh in the CLGA‘s nationwide training programme on the revised local governance Act.
