The College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana (UG) has initiated a campaign to raise over GH¢1.6 million in support of the refurbishment and digitization of the college’s library.
At a fundraising event, Provost of the College Health Sciences, Rev. Prof. Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, said the current state of the library, established in 1966, does not merit its status as a regional facility for the study of health sciences.
He opined that the library— which serves the interests of its constituent institutions such as the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, School of Nursing & Midwifery, School of Pharmacy and Medicine and Dentistry— has outlived its relevance compared to other libraries elsewhere in the world.
“Our vision and mandate is to bring good health, comfort and happiness to people by ensuring that we produce highly qualified and competent health professionals and medical scientist to provide preventive and curative services to the health needs of the nation and global community,” he reiterated.
Rev. Prof. Ayeh-Kumi, who paid glowing tribute to the fundraising committee and corporate institutions present during the cocktail, indicated that the college which runs health-related programmes from bachelors to PhD. levels has a student population of 3,038 and staff of 1,406.
The chairperson for the fundraising committee, Prof. Angela L. Ofori-Atta, called on the guests to donate generously towards the college’s intention in order to help build a partnership of purpose with corporate institutions and by this arrangements exchange services.
She reiterated that modernising the library would give greater confidence to their students while also opening them up electronically to other libraries elsewhere in the world.
