Construction Of First Manganese Refinery Kicks Off In August

Samuel Abu Jinapor

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has announced plans for the commencement of construction of Ghana’s inaugural manganese refinery in August this year.

This pioneering project is poised to mark a significant milestone in the country’s natural resource sector, with Ningxia Tianyuan Manganese Industry Group Company Limited, the parent entity of Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), leading the initiative.

The establishment of the manganese refinery holds strategic importance in the efforts to add value to Ghana’s abundant manganese reserves.

By augmenting beneficiation processes and promoting local content and participation in the mining sector, the government aims to ensure that Ghanaians reap the full benefits as the rightful custodians of the nation’s mineral wealth.

Addressing stakeholders at the 17th edition of the West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition (WAMPOC/WAMPEX) in Accra, Minister Jinapor reaffirmed the commitment to fostering value addition through partnerships with private enterprises.

He highlighted ongoing endeavors such as the operational 400kg capacity gold refinery and the upcoming manganese refinery project valued at US$450 million as pivotal steps towards enhancing the country’s mineral processing capabilities.

Transforming Prospects Into Business

Emphasizing the significance of platforms like WAMPOC/WAMPEX in catalyzing investment opportunities, Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, underscored the event’s role in facilitating business engagements. With a notable 40% conversion rate translating prospects into tangible deals, the conference serves as a catalyst for driving sustainable investment ventures in the mining and power sectors.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of sponsors, partners, and participants in ensuring the success of the forum, Akafia extended gratitude for their unwavering support.

He urged attendees to actively engage in discussions, leverage networking opportunities, and capitalize on the insights shared during the event to contribute to the continued growth and development of mining and power industries across West Africa.

Under the theme, “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities,” this year’s conference aims to foster dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration crucial for advancing sustainable practices and expanding investment prospects in the region.
