Court Dismisses KT Hammond’s Election Petition

THE HIGH Court in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region has dismissed an election petition filed by former Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahiru Hammond (KT Hammond), challenging the election of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani as Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa Constituency.

The decision followed repeated failures by the former MP for the area to follow up on the parliamentary election petition which challenged the results of the December 7, 2024 election, which he lost by 954 votes.

The court, presided over by Justice Kwabena Twumasi, in a ruling on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, described the petition as a waste of the court’s time and subsequently struck it out for want of prosecution.

The court further awarded a cost of GH¢60,000 against Mr. Hammond in favour of Mr. Dorani.

Richard Andy, counsel for Mr. Dorani, expressed relief that the case had finally been dismissed, indicating that it lacked merit.

He said the dismissal of the petition would allow the MP to concentrate fully on his parliamentary duties.

Mr. Hammond filed the petition challenging his defeat in the parliamentary election.

He lost the seat he had occupied since 2001 when he was first elected in the 2000 election.

Mr. Dorani, who contested on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had polled 14,229 votes, as against Mr. Hammond’s 13,275 – a difference of 954 votes.

However, Mr. Hammond failed to appear before the court for three consecutive times, leading the presiding judge to strike the case out.
