CPP Speaks On Defunct Factories

The leadership of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the Upper East Region has urged government to direct some resources and support, especially those meant for the “One District, One Factory” programme, to revamp all defunct factories built by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

CPP believes that these factories were deliberately built for specific food processing and built closer to their raw materials, hence the need for government to invest directly or get local or foreign investors to revive them to create jobs and provide wholesome food for the people of the Upper East Region and Ghana as a whole.

The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party, Alhaji Husein Ibrahim, made the appeal in an interview days after he had led some party executives and members to the defunct Zuarungu Meat Factory in the Bolgatanga East District and others in the region.

Alhaji Husein also urged government to revamp the Rice Mills at Zuarungu and in Bolgatanga, as well as the Tomato Factory to encourage farmers to invest in cultivating raw materials for these factories and also create jobs for the youth living around the factories.

In his view, the structures that housed the factories during the days of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah are still available, as well as the sources of raw materials. He added that once the factories start working, farmers will increase their investment to produce more of the raw materials the factories will need.

The party also suggested to government to fix a 10 per cent tax on all minerals extracted in the country purposely to fund education.

“Government is on track by implementing the Free SHS, but the Convention People’s Party wants government to get a secure source of funding for quality senior high school education across the country to ensure equity . . .” Alhaji Husein Ibrahim said.
