Highlife legend, Kojo Antwi, has revealed that a secret relationship with a police officer’s daughter nearly disrupted his early music career.
Speaking on Joy FM, the musician said the incident happened almost 50 years ago, when he was still a “band boy” and far from becoming a household name.
Kojo Antwi explained that while performing at Walako, a popular spot near Kaneshie, his girlfriend, who was supposed to be in school, came to see him. Worried about her safety and the consequences, he decided to escort her home during a break in the performance.
As they waited by the roadside for a taxi, a police patrol team stopped and questioned them.
“I decided to send her home. So I took her to try to grab a taxi to get her home. We were there when the police patrol team just bumped into us and started asking us questions. One question. They wouldn’t even wait for answers,” he said.
The situation worsened when the officers took them to the girl’s mother, where Kojo learned for the first time that her father was a senior police officer stationed at the Nima Police Station and had already been searching for them.
“I didn’t know her father was a police officer. She had never mentioned him,” Kojo Antwi noted.
He added that at the time, being a musician was not regarded as a respectable profession, especially by conservative families.
“Back then, music didn’t come with any prestige. It’s not something a policeman would want his daughter to be associated with,” he said.
