Parents have been advised not to expose their nakedness to their children.
Reverend Mrs Suzie Lamptey, a renowned relationship and family counsellor, who gave the advice, said even though most parents make conscious efforts to prevent their children from watching pornographic materials, they unconsciously expose them to the same things at home by exposing their nakedness to them.
Rev Mrs Lamptey explained that such exposures replay on the minds of the children when they are alone, leading to them to touch their genitals.
She further noted that the touching of their genitals leads to masturbating and sexual abuse since they cannot touch the parents who showed their nakedness to them.
She disclosed this at a day’s seminar for parents of the Golden Treasures International School in Tema organized by the school’s Parents Teacher Conference (PTC) on the theme, “Knowing and understanding your child.”
She disclosed that many couples experience challenges in their marriages as a result of extreme masturbation from their childhood.
According to her, such persons marry because of societal pressure and do not find sexual satisfaction from their partners but themselves.
She pleaded with parents to desist from bathing with their children and dressing in front of them, saying “bath the children whilst you have covered yourself and let them leave before you bath.”
Touching on other aspects of parenting, she encouraged parents to use at least 15 minutes to address the challenges of children at school and home each day.
She also asked them to promote good behaviours exhibited by their children.
Rev Mrs Lamptey also reminded parents that as leaders in the homes, they must teach their children to be generous by occasionally giving them gifts.
Parents, she said, must also monitor what their children do on social media, since the children and youth are adopting unacceptable behaviours online.
Erick Andoh, PTC Chairman, said the seminar is an annual activity organized for parents and teachers of the school to discuss selected topics.
Mr. Andoh added that the seminar serves as a platform for parents to acquire insight into the cognitive and physiological growth of their children to help them face new challenges in parenting.
