Kwasi Akuffo, a 56-year-old driver who impregnated his 15-year-old house-help, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.
This was after the court, presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, found Akuffo guilty on the charge of defilement.
It ordered Akuffo to pay GH¢5,000.00 to the victim to take care of the child.
Akuffo is said to have continuously defiled the victim after she gave birth.
The prosecutor Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant is a social worker with the Adenta Social Welfare Department, while the victim is a school dropout residing at Adenta, New Legon in Accra.
According to the prosecution, Akuffo resides in the same house with the victim and his wife.
He said eight years ago, Akuffo’s wife brought the victim to stay with them at Haatso to assist them with house chores.
In 2013, Akuffo, his wife and the victim relocated to Adenta, New Legon where Akuffo’s wife ventured into the soap-making business.
The prosecution said in April 2016 at about 09:00 hours, whilst the wife was away, Akuffo took advantage of the situation and had sex with the girl.
The prosecution said the victim got pregnant and after delivery, Akuffo’s wife took her to the Dodowa Government Hospital where she undertook family planning method.
The prosecution said investigations revealed that Akuffo continued to have sex with the victim after she delivered.
The victim, who could not bear the situation any longer, reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVUSU) at Adenta, and a social worker was assigned to the case.
The police issued a medical form to the victim to seek medical attention.
