The Electoral Commission (EC) has saluted women for their contribution towards the development of the country.

In a statement on the occasion of the International Women’s Day which fell on last Friday, the Chairperson of the Commission, Ms Jean Mensa, stated that “the EC recognizes and acknowledges the numerous contributions women have made to our democratization and development process and we applaud and celebrate them on this special occasion.”

She said the EC stands by the UN theme for this year’s occasion of ‘Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change’. She added “as an election management body, we are committed to supporting equal rights to men and women in our electoral process. EC pledges to support women to stand as equal partners and empower them to contribute their quota to the building of a humane society in Ghana.”

The election management body charged women to rise up and break the glass ceiling by making a difference in our society through creative and impactful innovation.

The EC applauded the first and second ladies, MPs, Ministers of State, women in the clergy, entrepreneurship, business leaders, civil society, activism and queen mothers who have contributed to making Ghana great and strong and changed the cause of women.

In another vein, the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana has recognised the role of women on the occasion in a statement authored by the Secretary General, Dr. Yaw Baah.

“The leadership and membership of the Trades Union Congress would like to congratulate all women on this special day dedicated to women for their immense contributions towards the building of a more equitable and just society” the statement said. It added that the theme: “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change” seeks to consolidate the gains made in Ghana and in other parts of the globe.

The statement said the TUC has over the years been a strong advocate of women’s rights at workplaces and in the community.

The congress called on the Ministry of Gender, Women and Children’s Affairs to work with human rights organizations and others to push for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill.
