POWER SUPPLY to the New Kejetia Market in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, has been curtailed.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) reportedly took that bold action on Wednesday over a GH¢5 million debt.
The facility was said to owe the power supply agency that whopping amount due to non-payment of light bills.
According to reports, the ECG has continually impressed upon the managers of the facility to pay but to no avail.
On Wednesday, the ECG therefore decided to remove Kejetia from the national grid to prevent further power debt.
Meanwhile, checks by the paper on Thursday revealed that the place looked very dark even in the afternoon.
In response, Nana Prempeh, a leading member of the traders, has said Kejetia is no longer safe.
“The place is looking very dark ever since the ECG cut power supply to Kejetia, and it put our safety at great risk.
“If power supply is not restored by 3pm on Thursday, we shall ask all the traders to pack their goods and leave.
“We will only return to Kejetia after the power supply has been restored,” Nana Prempeh informed journalists.
He said it is unacceptable for Kejetia with over 7,000 shops to have just a single meter, adding “this is the cause of the problem.”
Nana Prempeh appealed to authorities concerned to provide a meter to every shop to stop the power debt issue.
