ELECTROCHEM GHANA Limited has targeted to produce over 500,000 bags of salt annually.

Daniel McKorley, Chairman of Electrochem Ghana Limited, who disclosed this, was addressing the chiefs and residents of communities around the Ada Songor area.

He assured them that they would not be excluded from exploiting the salt resource in the Songor Lagoon.

He pointed out that the company had earmarked special pans for the locals to mine safely without destroying the environment.

According to him, when the project is completed, the pans would be operated by the communities located around the Songor Lagoon. This is aimed at putting an end to illegal and environmentally harmful salt mining.

Mr. McKorley said the community pans that have been created by Electrochem would be filled with brine to help achieve their target.

He further assured that all the communities located around the lagoon would benefit from the construction of the pans, and expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of Ada for supporting the project.

Communities that would benefit from the pans include Bonikope, Avakpe, Toflokpo and Kposem.

McKorley additionally disclosed that over 1,000 indigenes of Ada had already been employed in various capacities on the concession in a spate of four months.

He disclosed that when the salt mine becomes fully operational, over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs would be created.

Electrochem has been granted a 15-year mining lease to exploit salt resource in the Songor Lagoon and surrounding communities by Parliament in October 2020.

Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, Paramount Chief of Ada, said the development of the project had exceeded the expectation of members of the council.

He pledged the support of the council for the project, and urged the youth to work to ensure that it becomes a success.

He also urged members of communities located around the lagoon who may still have some concerns to use dialogue to resolve such issues because the success of the mine would bring development to the area.
