Officials of Ellembelle Assembly and Ghana Gas
The Ellembelle District Assembly in the Western Region is complementing government’s efforts in promoting education across the district irrespective of one’s social background.
To this end, the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana National Gas Company, has launched a scholarship scheme to support about 360 students to further their education in various tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the official launch of the scheme, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Kwasi Bonzoh believed that one of the most effective tools to accelerate national development is through education.
He was hopeful that the scheme would serve as respite for brilliant students in the district whose parents do not have the financial capabilities to support their children to further their education at the tertiary levels.
He added that as a visionary leader, the current president introduced the free Senior High School (SHS) policy to make education accessible to all.
“So the assembly is complementing the president’s vision with the scholarship scheme to create unlimited access to tertiary education for students who want to further their education to the highest level”, he added.
The DCE explained that, the Ellembelle District Assembly for some years now has been assisting some few brilliants but needy students from the assembly’s meagre resources.
He was, therefore, grateful to the leadership of Ghana Gas Company for agreeing to collaborate with the assembly to increase the number of beneficiary students in the district adding “This is a gift from heaven and a dream come true”.
He appealed to other corporate institutions operating in the area to come on board to make the scheme very effective to support more students.
“We had over 500 applications and out that 360 students would receive the support in this maiden edition. We hope other organizations will come on board so we can increase the number of beneficiaries”, he noted.
The Senior Manager, Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Ghana Gas, Stephen Donkor said his outfit was committed to supporting the education of the students in the company’s catchment areas.
He urged the beneficiary students to study hard and make good use of the opportunity to prove that the investment made in their education was worth it.
The District Director of Education, Wilfred Katey Adodoadzi bemoaned the fact that the district lacked teachers, particularly at the basic school level.
“We have about 160 teachers’ vacancies to be filled at the basic level and we hope that those who will be teachers among the beneficiaries would accept postings to the district to serve and give back to the society”.
