‘Entrepreneurship Should Be Compulsory In Schools’

Dr. Stephen Amoah

The Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Stephen Amoah, says entrepreneurship should be officially included in the country’s academic curricula as compulsory subject at the senior high school (SHS) and tertiary level.

According to him, the state must give entrepreneurship the needed consideration in the state budget to ensure development of the youth.

Dr. Amoah was speaking at the third edition of the annual Financial Economics Seminar at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme, “Entrepreneurship, a functional element for economic growth and stability of developing economies.”

The seminar was organised by Financial Economics Institute Africa – an organisation that brings together experts and scholars from academia, industry players and government officials to discuss and analyse the challenges facing developing economies.

Other speakers at this year’s seminar include Prof. Atinuke Olusola Adebanji, Head of Department, Statistics Actuarial Science, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and Apostle Samuel Amponsah-Frimpong Esq, Chairman of the Christ Apostolic Church International.

Dr. Amoah underscored the need for entrepreneurship, saying that it creates new businesses, employments, enhances purchasing power and revenue generation, and reduces national deficit.

At the national level, he maintained that entrepreneurship, a healthy balance between the macro-economic and micro-economic sectors, helps in the fiscal consideration process and reduces monopoly, oligopoly and cartel, which are dysfunctional to stable economic performance.

The way to go, he believes, is entrepreneurship, especially for a country such as Ghana that has a wide range of commercially viable raw materials, natural resources and a large size of labour force with diverse skills.

Prof. Atinuke Olusola Adebanji stated that government must create enabled environment for the youth to development their potential as far as entrepreneurship is concerned.

Apostle Samuel Amponsah-Frimpong Esq, also pointed out that Christian faith has offered a lot to develop the country’s economy and entrepreneurship.

He added that there is the need for the country to empower the youth to develop their skills, who will eventually contribute to national development.
