Madam Cecilia Asaga with the pupils of Kings Star Academy
Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executive committee and coordinator of the educational forum for students in the Bunkpurugu constituency, in the North East Region, Cecilia Asaga, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to establish mentorship programmes for young individuals.
According to her, the purpose of the call for mentorship is to instill leadership skills in the youth at an early age and ensure that they retain these skills as they mature.
She emphasised the necessity for MPs to develop a succession plan to ensure a smooth transition of power in the event of their departure from parliamentary service.
She gave these remarks at an educational session hosted by the public engagement department of parliament on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the Justice D.F. Annan auditorium for pupils Kings Star Academy from the Bunkpurugu constituency.
During their visit, the students were given an exclusive tour of the Parliament building, guided by several members of Parliament who were genuinely impressed by the students’ knowledge and enthusiasm.
They also had the opportunity to witness a live parliamentary session and even interact with some of the MPs, who commended them for their exceptional efforts.
Madam Cecilia Asaga emphasised the need for teachers to observe their students to identify their leadership abilities and talents and develop them into future leaders.
“I was inspired and awestruck by the performance of these young people, so facilitating their travel from the north to Parliament House to observe proceedings live was intended to encourage them to work hard and become what they demonstrated in the video,” she explained.
The NDC NEC member went on to say that previously MPs only represented their constituents and reported back to them on the happenings and proceedings in parliament, which was a one-sided affair, but now the work of a parliamentarian is an exchange of information between the MPs and constituents,
Madam Cecilia Asaga noted that coordinating and facilitating the movement of these students from the North East Region to Accra would not have been possible without the support and assistance of individuals, philanthropists, and other corporate organisations, especially regarding their lodging, feeding, and medical care.
She used the occasion to express her utmost gratitude and appreciation to organisations for supporting the programme.
Some of the students expressing their opinion about the visit said it was an inspiring experience.
They expressed their gratitude to the coordinator of the forum, Cecilia Asaga, and their MP for making it possible for them to observe the real-life parliamentary proceedings.
