Mohammed Hafiz after his rescue
A 25-YEAR-OLD man believed to be mentally retarded has been rescued from mob attack by the Community 1 District police for allegedly possessing a bag containing human head.
The man, Mohammed Hafiz, who is said to be having no permanent place of abode, was nearly lynched, having been accused of killing two persons and keeping the head of one of them in his bag for (money) ritual purpose.
A search conducted in the bag at the police station revealed garbage such as charcoal, dirty cloths, pieces of paper, plastic materials and rubber bag containing what was believed to be human excreta.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, spokesperson for the Tema police command, told DAILY GUIDE that the incident occurred at about 5:00 pm when the suspect was carrying his bag at the central business district in Tema.
According to her, a resident who spotted the suspect and the nature of the bag, with some white substance believed to be powder on it, raised false alarm that the suspect had killed some people and keeping the heads in the bag for rituals.
She indicated that in a twinkle of an eye, the mob appeared from nowhere and attacked the suspect.
ASP Obeng added that the police, who got hint of the incident, rushed to the scene and saw the suspect being subjected to severe beatings by irate mob.
According to her, he was rescued and brought to the police station to ascertain what was contained in the bag.
She maintained that a search in the bag revealed the above-mentioned items.
Some of the residents who heard about the incident, she said, besieged the area to catch a glimpse of the suspect and the purported human head.
