Fare Thee Well The Departed 8

An interdenominational service is holding today for the souls of the eight of our compatriots who lost their lives while on a national assignment.

We as mortals can only do so much in matters which are spiritual in nature and therefore beyond us.

As we undertake a joint intercession for their souls, let us do so with a sense of humility and national unity.

Having completed the three-days of national mourning as directed by the President, today’s service brings back the pain we endured when news about the tragedy was broken to the nation.

The family is commencing the difficult process of healing, challenging moments which would require the support of the extended family and all of us as compatriots.

Besides comforting words of encouragement and prayers, we should for the sake of the bereaved families and the souls of the departed avoid unnecessary and uninformed remarks which do only add to the pain of families of the departed.

Such calls were made earlier but expectedly a few yet loud reckless persons have ignored them and spewed unproductive rhetoric.

We witnessed the sense of national unity as displayed by our compatriots on the other side of the political divide in a country which is highly polarised. These politicians joined their compatriots in the ruling party to mourn the departed, a wonderful gesture.

It was the expectation by some observers that this display would serve as an appropriate foundation for a new Ghana. It was only a wish, not horses, and beggars are unable to ride them.

We join in the prayers by the men of God from both the Abrahamic faiths of Christianity and Islam to seek the Almighty Creator’s favour for the departed and comfort for the families they left behind.

Many lessons abound for the living when deaths occur. As actors on the stage of life, it is ordained for us to play our parts and leave for others to continue from where we stopped.

The speed with which the departed eight left the terra firma for the hereafter testifies unambiguously to the ephemeralness of the world.

The words of the living when their fellow human beings are called by their Maker go a long way to state the nature of life they lived. All should learn to act well on the stage of life by being truthful and honest. Let us learn to love one another and not allow the glitters of life to deceive us into forgetting that life is transient.

As the nation prays for the souls of the departed, let us learn to forgive one another and avoid the path of vindictiveness and revenge; for vengeance is the Lord’s.

May the Almighty Creator accept the national intercession so that the souls of the departed    eight rest in perfect peace.
