The burnt down house
A BLAZE has razed down the house of an ageing newspaper vendor at Krofrom, a developing suburb of Adwumakase-Kese, a town in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region.
The fire, which began barely an hour into a torrential rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at about 8:00 p.m. recently, consumed the four-bedroom house, rendering Christopher Kwame Fobi, 58, the victim, and his family homeless.
There was no casualty but an amount of GH¢1,500, New Patriotic Party (NPP) paraphernalia, including quantities of handkerchiefs, flags, fans, two sets of television, sound systems, beds, chairs and quantities of unsold newspapers were destroyed.
The immediate cause of the blaze could not be established, but Mr. Fobi attributed it to lightning, which struck the house during the rainfall.
Sorrow-stricken Fobi said his attention to the fire was drawn by a neighbour, who first saw a smoke billowing out of the building as he was relaxing in the sitting room.
He said he quickly moved out of the building to save his life when he saw that the fire had already ravaged some parts of the house without securing anything.
The victim said even though personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were called, by the time they arrived, the properties had already been reduced to ashes except a portion of the garage which was salvaged.
The newspaper vendor appealed to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), benevolent companies and individuals to help him find accommodation.
