Fixing The Nation Continues Unabated

Fixing Ghana requires stoicism on the part of both the citizenry and officialdom. The former have a larger role to play in this direction than the latter since after all they live in the communities and neighbourhoods where abuse of the environment among other blemishes, takes place.

It is a misplacement of priorities when some political deviants seek to pass the buck of fixing to those in authority only.

Hiding behind the political projects of those seeking to lead and engaging in a so-called campaign of demanding the fixing of the country is by itself an act of mendacity and insincerity. Those engaged in such pastimes must have their cognitions examined and fixed.

From academic leaders who bend the rules of integrity by awarding marks to persons of the opposite sex conditionally to those who construct structures on waterways and other unauthorised locations, abound palpable instances of undisciplined conduct which require immediate addressing if we want to move on as a nation.

These are the issues requiring ‘fixing’ and the public nuisance.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey we are sure was not surprised at the instances of indiscipline which he encountered when he descended on his own constituency last Monday as part of his ongoing decongestion, if you like, ‘fixing’ campaign.

Those who irresponsibly let effluence onto the street and others who put up structures on state lands are destroying the environments in diverse ways and also endangering lives.

These were some of the eyesores the Regional Minister and the Regional Coordinating Council beheld when they touched down on the Ayawaso Central Constituency yesterday.

The scenes the minister and his team saw are replicated in all the municipalities of the nation’s capital.

For how long shall we remain in this worrying state of filth and towering indiscipline? Must we always wait to be compelled to do the right thing?

Until last Monday’s action when illegal structures were pulled down, the cynicism was rife about the regional minister avoiding his own constituency which like others, was not spared the feature of illegal structures strewn all over the place with litters of filth interspersed.

Now he has descended on the constituency, regardless of whose ox is gored.

The so-called ‘fixing Ghana’ campaign now moribund anyway was without sincerity the real motive being a mischievous political agenda.

A sincere fix the country campaign would entail patriotic citizens calling the attention of the authorities to the springing up of illegal structures and other illegalities including supporting the authorities to ensure that the right things are done.

The regional minister’s campaign requires the support of true sons and daughters of the land.

Idle and pretentious ‘fixers’ should join the campaign in effecting attitudinal changes in their compatriots. But before they do let them cleanse themselves of the diabolical attributes in them. This way they will be adequately primed to stop residents from dumping garbage in gutters, constructing on waterways and expose amorous lecturers not forgetting demons in the public service who stand in the way of the progress of the nation.
