The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups using military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements without authorization.
This caution comes after several instances of protesters, private security personnel, and galamsey operators donning military attire, despite ongoing education and warnings.
In recent demonstrations in Accra and Kumasi, some protesters and individuals claiming to provide private security to dignitaries were spotted wearing military-pattern camouflage uniforms and other military-style gear.
Similar instances were observed during anti-galamsey operations conducted by GAF.
Background of the Issue
This is not the first time GAF has addressed this issue.
In 2023, the GAF warned the public about the unlawful use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements, citing the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which prohibits unauthorized use of military attire.
Security Implications
The misuse of military attire can facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities, posing a serious threat to public safety.
In a statement the GAF emphasizes that these actions risk creating a false impression that these individuals are part of the Armed Forces, thereby tarnishing its reputation.
GAF’s Response
In light of the security implications, GAF will take decisive actions, including arresting persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigor of the law.
The public is urged to report any suspicious activities involving unauthorized military attire.
