Germany Clinch Conf. Cup …Portugal Pick Bronze

Germany yesterday sealed the Confederations Cup with a narrow victory over Chile with Lars Stindl scoring the winning goal in front of a packed stadium in Saint Petersburg.

The young German squad took the lead after 21 minutes and then absorbed a barrage of pressure from the Copa America champions, who were guilty of spurning a host of chances.

Without the likes of Manuel Neuer or Mesut Ozil, this young German squad showed maturity, but both teams threw down markers ahead of next year’s World Cup.

In the third place game, Mexico came so very close to victory, but it was Portugal who ultimately claimed victory at Spartak Stadium with a 2-1 win.
