Ghana Suspends All Boxing Activities Following Death Of Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey

THE NATIONAL Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has announced the immediate suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana after the tragic death of professional boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

The decision, officials say, is aimed at prioritising the safety, health, and welfare of athletes in the sport.

Akushey’s passing came just months after the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, which had already triggered a ministerial review into safety standards in Ghanaian boxing.

According to the NSA, preparations had already been completed to roll out reforms recommended by the Ministerial Committee on Boxing.

Central to these reforms is a five-year safety and development plan, including the creation of a nine-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the sport’s affairs.

The reforms are expected to tighten medical checks, strengthen technical procedures, and enhance regulatory oversight, ensuring that boxing in Ghana is conducted in line with international safety and professional standards.

“The suspension may cause immediate challenges, but it is a necessary step to protect lives, preserve the integrity of the sport, and secure its future,” the NSA said in a statement.

Stakeholders, including promoters, coaches, officials, athletes, and the media, have been urged to respect the directive as authorities work toward a safe and responsible return of the sport.
