GJA Condemns Assault On Journalist By Bishop Salifu Amoako’s Sympathizers

Murtala Inusah

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the vicious assault on EIB Network’s court correspondent, Murtala Inusah, by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The attack occurred on October 16, 2024, while Inusah was covering the bishop’s court appearance.

Background

Bishop Salifu Amoako and his wife, Mouha, were arraigned in connection with a fatal accident involving their 16-year-old son.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, and tensions ran high during the court proceedings.

Assault and Aftermath

Inusah, an accredited member of the Judicial Press Corps, was filming the proceedings when he was attacked by the bishop’s sympathizers.

They allegedly stole his mobile phone and left him with severe bodily pain and cuts on his fingers.

A police court warrant officer who intervened was also assaulted.

GJA’s Response

The GJA has denounced the attack as “devilish” and urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly arrest and prosecute the assailants.

The association also called on the Judiciary to severely punish those found guilty.

Security Concerns

The GJA expressed concerns about the safety of journalists reporting from courts and appealed to the Judicial Service and Police to provide maximum security.

Previous Attacks

This incident is not isolated. Journalists in Ghana have faced increasing hostility and violence while performing their duties.
