Govt Transition Team Dismisses Misleading Claims
The Government Transition Team (GTT) has dismissed claims that the Joint Transition Committee (JTC) had requested that all ongoing payments and recruitment be referred to it for a decision to be taken.
According to the GTT, these claims do not reflect the records of the meeting, urging the public to disregard any statements purporting to indicate such a decision.
Spokesperson for the GTT, Fatimatu Abubakar, who is also the outgoing Minister for Information, said in a statement that it was noted that “the Government’s term expires at the midnight of January 6, 2025.”
“These recruitment processes and payments have received the relevant statutory approvals and have not been proven to be illegal,” she stated.
Ms. Abubakar indicated that it was decided that any specific allegation of illegality about any particular payment or recruitment should be brought to the attention of the Transition Team for a decision to be made.
“Kindly disregard any statements purporting to indicate that the committee has taken a decision to the effect that all ongoing payments and recruitment should be referred to the Transition Team, as the same does not reflect the records of the meeting,” she stressed.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to a seamless transitional process “as we prepare to pass the baton to the incoming government on January 7, 2025.”
The GTT spokesperson also noted that the Transition Team, at its second meeting on December 13, 2024, took some decisions, including the constitution of six (6) additional sub-committees.
The sub-committees are Finance and Economy, Energy and Natural Resources, Legal and Governance, Infrastructure, Interior/Public Safety (Security), and Social Sector.
Ms. Abubakar announced that an agreement was reached that membership of various sub-committees would consist of three nominees from both the outgoing and incoming governments.
Additionally, the Head of Civil Service, Head of Local Government Service, and Cabinet Secretary will join any committee as needed.
“The Co-Chairs further directed that handing over notes should be delivered to the sub-committee to commence work immediately. The initial work is expected to be delivered within one week,” she added.
According to her, additionally, outgoing Sector Ministers, Heads of Agencies and Technical Staff will be invited to assist the sub-committees when handing over notes submitted by their respective sectors are being discussed.
