‘Gyan Remains Stars Captain’

Asamoah Gyan

Back Stars manager, Kwasi Appiah has poured cold water on wild speculation that Kwadwo Asamoah has taken over as the new Ghana captain, replacing Asamoah Gyan.

Last week, it came up that coach Appiah will announce a new captain for his side as he prepares for next month’s Nations Cup qualifier against Kenya in Nairobi.

He, however, told the media on Monday at the launch of the JAK Cup, to treat it with deserved contempt.

Coach Appiah mentioned that “We have no new captain. Asamoah Gyan remains the captain of the Black Stars. Until we announce that we have appointed a new captain, it’s unnecessary for people to speculate that we have a new captain.”

The former Black Stars captain added “This captaincy issue keeps coming up and brings troubles in the team. We want to have our peace. Ghanaians should support the team and stop bringing up issues that do not exist.”

Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Partey has been handed the role on an interim basis.

Coach Kwesi Appiah is expected to announce the squad for AFCON qualifier against Kenya in the coming days with Kwadwo Asamoah making a return after a 4-year break from international football.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are expected to pitch camp in Ethiopia ahead of the Kenyan clash on September 8, in Nairobi.
