IGP, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare

The Ghana Police Service has categorically denied allegations regarding the training of militiamen in Kwahu, in the Eastern Region, in preparation for the upcoming 2024 general election.

In an official press statement, the Police Command dismissed the claims as unfounded and assured the public that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for spreading such misinformation.

“We wish to state that our investigation has found no evidence of such training in the area,” the statement read. “The Police have commenced investigations to identify those behind the false publication to answer for their actions in accordance with the law.”

Caution To Political Parties

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who heads the election security taskforce, has urged political parties to address any concerns regarding the electoral process through appropriate legal channels.

He emphasised that any attempt to disrupt peace would be met with legal repercussions.

“Maintaining peace, law, and order throughout the election process is vital,” IGP Dampare stated. “All stakeholders play a critical role in ensuring the security and wellbeing of Ghana.”

He reassured that all 38,622 polling stations will be supported by rapid response teams from the Police Command, prepared to manage any potential escalations.

“We urge all stakeholders, particularly political parties, to address any issues or concerns through proper legal channels. We do not want to see anyone taking the law into their own hands. Should this occur, we will address it in accordance with the law,” he added.

Furthermore, IGP Dampare noted that the security taskforce has been closely collaborating with the Electoral Commission throughout the election preparation stages, including voter registration and the management of the special voters’ register.

He expressed confidence that this year’s elections will be conducted with exceptional peace, transparency, and fairness.
