Songstress, iOna Reine, has added her voice to the fight against galamsey and illegal logging of trees.
According to her, these activities have been depleting Ghana’s environmental cover and water bodies, hence everyone must endeavour to join the fight to keep the environment safe for the benefit of humanity.
“As a singer, I believe I have a responsibility to add my voice to the call for sustainable water usage. The Sustainable Development Goal Six; Clean Water and Sanitation, offers us a good opportunity to share and educate the populace about the implications of pollution of water bodies and wasteful use of water. Water is a key factor in ensuring proper sanitation in homes, offices, industries and public spaces.
“I call on all to value water and to remain responsible for its use. Ability to afford water should not guarantee one to be wasteful with it,” she said.
IOna, born Mercy Onuawonto Sam, was speaking during a discussion on ‘Valuing Water’ with Mr. Bob Amiteye, Coordinator of Abibi Nsroma Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Tema, to mark the World Water Day, 2021.
The songstress emphasised the important role of water in our everyday lives; from childhood to adulthood, in food preparation, clothing, shelter, and in the healthcare delivery system, hence everyone must make it a point to keep the system safe.
Meanwhile, in a related development, iOna Reine started engaging learners in schools about the importance of water to human survival and it’s challenging threats from climate change and pollution of water bodies through illegal mining and poor disposal of industrial waste. “Who can live without water and for how long? Individuals can save water when brushing their teeth by not letting water flow wastefully and when using the shower,” the songstress indicated.
