A SPORTS JOURNALIST of Jem FM in Kumasi was mercilessly beaten in the open by Asante Kotoko goons during a league match at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.
The journalist, who was running commentary for his radio station, reportedly, said the penalty which was awarded to Kotoko to beat Dreams FC by a solitary goal, looked dubious.
The victim, identified as Gomez, according to eye witness reports, looked hapless as the Kotoko goons, led by one Seidu and another muscularly-built man, threw punches at him.
The Jem FM reporter, after receiving several hefty blows, took to his heels for cover, but the blood-thirsty assailants would not let him in go as they chased him and threw more blows at him.
One Rich, a Sports Journalist with Nhyira FM in Kumasi, said it took the intervention of some Kotoko fans to save then weak-looking journalist.
Bright Kankam Boadu, Head of Sports, Nhyira FM, condemned the violent attack on the sports journalist, saying “what happened to the Jem FM reporter is barbaric and it should be condemned”.
He charged Kotoko Management, led by Opoku Nti, to quickly come out and condemn the attack and duly apologize to Gomez and all other sports journalists in Kumasi and Ghana in general.
Osei Oware, a senior sports journalist also working with Nhyira FM, said the goons that manhandled the journalist should not go unpunished, suggesting that the case should be reported to the police.
