Kaakyire Kwame Appiah
Veteran Highlife artiste and chief, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah, has declared that his royal status would not hinder him from actively participating in the upcoming 2024 general election campaign for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The ‘Bronya’ hitmaker, known for his allegiance to the NPP, emphasised that everyone has the right to associate with a political party, including himself as a chief.
Speaking on Cape Coast-based PROPERTY FM, he expressed his determination to contribute to the political discourse.
“I’ll be well involved in the campaign for the 2024 elections because I have to also share my opinion when it’s time for that,” Kaakyire Kwame Appiah asserted during the radio interview.
He further explained, “Everyone has got a political party that interests them but when you realise things aren’t going well, you say it during meetings.”
Acknowledging the backlash faced by him and other popular musicians who campaigned for the NPP in previous elections, the artiste urged the government to address concerns, and improve its performance.
He highlighted the need for the government to “put their best foot forward” to counter criticisms, and dispel claims of incompetence.
“When we meet, we talk about how people are lambasting us especially those of us who campaigned for NPP in the previous elections. So they should change things for the better, and if a Chief was able to become an MP in Ghana why should they ban us from doing politics?” Kaakyire Kwame Appiah continued.
This bold declaration from the veteran musician and Chief sets the stage for his active involvement in the political landscape, emphasising the importance of freedom of association and the right to express one’s political opinions, even for those in traditional leadership roles.
