The Kpone Landfill Decommissioning Project, an initiative by the Government of Ghana under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, has earned global recognition at the World FIDIC Conference, held in Geneva from September 8-10, 2024.
The conference, which gathers leaders from the global engineering, construction, and infrastructure sectors, focused on the theme, ‘Transforming Lives with Infrastructure: Investing in and Building a Better World for All.’
This recognition came after an insightful presentation by Ing. Felix Atsrim, CEO of FeDems Limited, a Ghanaian engineering consulting firm involved in the project under the topic ‘keeping the menace the sustainable way: a case of the Kpone Landfill Decommisioning’.
The Kpone Landfill Decommissioning Project, executed by Zoomlion Ghana Ltd (Jospong Group) in collaboration with local and international partners, was hailed as a significant achievement in environmental rehabilitation and sustainable development.
The project, under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, successfully transformed the once problematic Kpone Landfill into a green space, utilising cutting-edge engineering solutions.
The collaborative efforts between the Jospong Group, FeDems Limited, Construction Ambassadors, Watershed Geo USA, Halliton (USA) and other partners not only addressed the landfill’s environmental and public health issues, but also set a benchmark for waste management and land reclamation across the region.
In his presentation, Ing. Atsrim emphasised the importance of strong partnerships between government, private sector entities, and local communities in achieving such transformative outcomes.
He highlighted the Kpone project as a shining example of how infrastructure development can address critical challenges like climate change, urbanisation, and public health.
Conference participants, including representatives from leading global engineering firms, government bodies, and international organisations, praised the Kpone project as a model for other nations facing similar environmental challenges.
The project’s success underscores the vital role of infrastructure in transforming lives and building a better world.
As the conference concluded, the Kpone Landfill Decommissioning Project was celebrated as an exemplary case of sustainable development through engineering, bringing significant global recognition to Jospong Group of Companies, FeDems Limited, and the Government of Ghana.
