Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah
In a closely contested election, Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah emerged as the flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for the upcoming general election.
At the party’s national congress held in Accra on Wednesday, Madam Kumankumah, a seasoned politician and former party chairperson, polled 763 votes out of 1,360 cast by delegates to beat her opponent, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, who received 586 votes. 11 votes were rejected.
The election came off after the party mended internal cracks which were seen to be a bane for the forward movement of CPP.
In her acceptance speech, Madam Sarpong Kumankumah thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to work tirelessly to restore the CPP to its former glory.
According to her, CPP will put the needs of the people at the forefront of its policies, adding, “Our approach will be bottom-up, not top-down. We will listen to the concerns of the ordinary Ghanaian and tailor our solutions to address their everyday challenges.”
Pledging to deliver on CPP’s promise of social justice and economic prosperity, she said, “I’m coming here with things that are not theory or theorised.”
The newly elected CPP flagbearer reaffirmed her commitment to grassroots governance, vowing to bring government services directly to the doorsteps of everyday Ghanaians.
Madam Kumankumah emphasised that her administration will prioritise the basic needs of ordinary citizens, including access to affordable accommodation, job opportunities, and support for family development.
“I’m coming here with you, the everyday people,” Kumankumah declared. “The everyday Ghanaian who needs accommodation, who needs jobs, who needs to have a family – those are the basics, they are fundamental, they are elementary. That is why we are bringing governance to the doorsteps of Ghanaians.”
