IGP Yohuno exchanging pleasantries with a traditional leader
An overwhelming number of Divisional Chiefs within the Kwahu Traditional Council assembled at the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service last Wednesday, to petition Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over the recent raid on the Omanhene’s palace by some police officers.
The petition, presented by the undersigned Wings and Divisional Chiefs, seeks to bring to the IGP’s urgent attention certain serious, unlawful, uncustomary, and illegal actions undertaken by some officers of the Police Service at Kwahu Omanhene’s Palace in Abene on November 17, 2025.
The petition also aims to plead with the IGP to fully investigate these actions and furnish the traditional council with a report on the outcome of the investigations.
It will be recalled that on November 17, 2025, around 4 a.m., some officers of the Ghana Police Service raided the Kwahu Omanhene Palace at Abene, with gunfire and brute force, desecrated the palace, and manhandled palace staff as well as the Queenmother.
The palace gardener, several sub-chiefs, Kwahuhemaa Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, and his traditional son, along with some palace staff, were arrested while in a vehicle en route to Accra.
The car plate on Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III’s official Palace Toyota Land Cruiser, which was parked at the palace, was removed, and the vehicle driven to Accra.
According to the petition, these illegal actions, which led to the arrest and detention of Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III and the Kwahuhemaa, constitute a disgrace within the institution of chieftaincy.
The petitioners are therefore requesting the Police Service to, as a matter of urgency, provide the traditional authorities with a copy of the order, be it a court order or order from the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs that the Ghana Police Service came to the Abene Palace to execute.
Also, they requested a copy of the proof of service indicating that this said order has been served on Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III and the other respondents to the petition in Suit No. JC/ERHC/P.4/2025, as well as a copy of the request from the Judicial Service for the Ghana Police Service to assist the court bailiffs/sheriffs in enforcing the said order.
They also called on the IGP to provide a copy of any request for police assistance in respect of the execution of the purported order at the Abene Palace, as well as a copy of the approval of the Ghana Police Service to assist in executing the said order.
The petitioners are also requesting for the name(s) of the court bailiffs/sheriffs or officers whom the police accompanied and assisted in executing the order under reference, as well as the name of the leader of the Ghana Police “JOC” Task Force that undertook the operation and/or provided police assistance at the Abene Palace on November 17, 2025.
The Divisional Chiefs further called on the IGP to provide a detailed explanation as to why the execution of this order required police assistance comprising more than twenty (20) armed police personnel from the Joint Operations Centre in Accra, rather than being handled by police officers from the nearest local police station.
They are also requesting a detailed explanation of what necessitated that the so-called order be enforced at approximately 3 a.m., a detailed explanation for the use of brute force by the police officers who undertook this exercise, their use of live bullets, and indiscriminate firing of guns for over 30 minutes, as well as a detailed explanation as to why every single occupant of the palace, apart from the Kwahuhemaa, was repeatedly assaulted, dragged to the ground, handcuffed, and transported from the Abene Palace to Accra.
The IGP, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in response, assured the traditional leaders of the Police Service’s interest in investigating the issues, calling on them to exercise patience as they undertake a peaceful investigation.
