Let All Be On Their Guard

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo

Sufficient signals have been exuded by the NDC about how they intend to engage in overt and covert shenanigans in their unproductive bid to paint a picture of insecurity for the country.

It is their alternative project should they fail to win the just ended elections. They did not win and so the dirty operations have begun in earnest. After all, they have nothing to lose and would rather conduct noisy street protests using largely uninformed youth.

Those who incite the burning of tyres on the streets across the country over an election they lost are indisputably implementing the contents of the leaked Ofosu Ampofo audio.

Make the country ungovernable, occupy the streets and besiege the EC headquarters among others are the key bullet points of the audio.

Of course they cannot achieve their objectives, they can nonetheless cause inconveniences to the good people of Ghana minding their businesses.

A couple of days ago, a segment of social media sympathetic to the NDC posted nasty things about torching incendiary locations such as fuel filling stations and markets.

Shouldn’t we be apprehensive therefore when the Kantamanto Market is torched eleven days after the December 7 polls?

Our fears are justifiable considering the pedigree of the NDC.

There is no justification why the market under review could have been torched when sufficient warning was served the security agencies about what was in store before and after the December 7 elections.

We do not have evidence about whether or not the fire outbreak which triggered this commentary is part of the overt and covert operations alluded to earlier.

We can however, recall the threats being issued by the opposition as the party wallows in the state of denial of the outcome of the recent elections.

Before the last elections, we had cause to caution the security agencies and the country as a whole about possible instances of arson across the country markets and state assets in particular being the targets.

We were pleased to note that fire tenders were deployed to some markets during the elections. It would appear however that the urgency at the time of the deployment has been reversed.

The Yuletide is close and disgruntled politicians with the power to order unruly youth into the streets can order the burning of markets and state assets.

The security agencies and the citizenry must be on their guard until much later.

Suspicious movements and activities should be reported to the security agencies without delay.

For the umpteenth time, we shall state that the security of the country is a shared responsibility. Shirking this shared responsibility could be costly for national security. A disgruntled political grouping is on the prowl ready to do anything however untoward.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
