The Western Regional Nasara Coordinator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Al-Labib Imam Ali, has appealed to delegates of the party to give an overwhelming endorsement to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on November 4, 2023, to lead the NPP in Election 2024.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s massive endorsement by the delegates will send shivers down the spine of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its 2024 candidate, John Mahama, in the next general elections.
He noted that the NDC has been accusing the NPP of being an Akan party which is against choosing a Northerner to lead them, adding, “But I asked the delegates to prove the NDC wrong.”
“I believe that the endorsement of the Vice President would make it somehow easier for the NPP to ‘break the 8’ or win the next general election,” he emphasised.
“We must remember that we are fighting a common political enemy–the NDC– and if we make any mistake, the NDC will capitalise on that and make the NPP unattractive to the voting population,” he stated.
The NPP will hold its presidential election on Saturday, November 4, 2023, with four candidates vying for the flagbearer spot.
The four consists of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, former Agriculture Minister and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Al-Labib, who also described himself as one of the Campaign Coordinators of the Vice President, argued that Dr. Bawumia is the right person to lead the NPP as flagbearer into the 2024 general elections.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE in an interview, the Regional Nasara Coordinator said he was of the view that all the odds were in favour of Dr. Bawumia taking charge of the party, as it seeks to win a third straight term to govern the country.
He indicated that Dr. Bawumia was best placed among the rest of the candidates as far as winning the 2024 elections and transforming Ghana was concerned.
“Having sacrificed his time, youth and expertise for the party since 2008 as well as serving diligently in the office of Vice President since 2017, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has built an impeccable track record in the administration and governance space,” he stated.
He conceded that even though the other aspirants in the flagbearership race are good material, Dr. Bawumia is the aspirant capable of winning political power for the party in the 2024 general elections.
“Without taking anything away from his contenders, I am of the strong opinion and conviction that the Vice President has what it takes to lead the NPP to victory come the next general elections,” he added.
He said considering the high stakes and dynamics ahead of the crucial 2024 elections in which the NPP is seeking to go beyond the eight-year political cycle, Dr. Bawumia will be the party’s best candidate.
He then called on the rank and file of the NPP, particularly, the discerning delegates from the Western Region, to resolve to help propel Dr. Bawumia to victory in the upcoming primaries to put the party in a pole position to ‘break the eight’ in 2024.
