‘Let’s Use Tech To Track Domestic Violence Offenders’

The Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has advocated for the use of technology as a significant step towards reducing domestic violence and creating a safer environment for all.

Speaking at the launch of the ‘Women of Valour – London’ last Tuesday, Nana Oye stated that the use of technology responsibly like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and national identification systems can help track repeat offenders, improve reporting systems, and identify patterns of abuse while protecting privacy.

She was of the view that, by identifying patterns of abuse, authorities can intervene early, protecting victims and preventing further harm.

“We must create safe digital spaces where citizens can participate actively in reporting cases of abuse. In addition, Cyber-bullying, body shaming and online harassment are new forms of violence. Governments, tech companies and activists must work together to protect women online,” she added.

Nana Oye Bampoe made a passionate call to the media, activists, policy makers, and partners — to renew their collective responsibility to build safe spaces that protect dreams, restore dignity, and create opportunities for every woman and every girl to contribute meaningfully to development.

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg, indicated that the UK Foreign Secretary recently launched a campaign on tackling violence against women and girls.

“So this issue that we’re focusing on today really goes to the heart of where the UK Government wants to put attention and wants to support the spotlight as well,” he said.

Ambassador Rogg talked about the need to raise awareness on acceptable and unacceptable behaviours, as well as “the ability for women and girls to report when they’re facing violence, when they’re facing abuse, and for credible systems that take action so that there’s confidence and trust in the mechanisms that are in place to support victims.”

“And of course, if you are a victim, you have access to psychological and psychosocial support to help you overcome that and still be able to thrive afterwards. So, these are many different steps, but when you take them together, they build a society where every girl can grow up without fear, and where every woman can pursue her ambitions freely,” he added.
