The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games is putting together a three-day sports festival for eight Muslim communities in the Greater Accra Region from May 1 to 3.
The competition is to honour the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
It is also aimed at creating awareness about the upcoming African Games next year, and will be dubbed “Sallah Games”, scheduled four days after the Ramadan.
The communities included are Shukura, Madina, Fadama, Cow-Lane, Mamobi, New Town and Nima.
The Executive Chairman of the LOC, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, said all is set for the competition.
The LOC boss, together with his board, called on the Chief Imam on Friday to inform him about the African Games and Ghana hosting it for the first time since its inception in 1965.
“After the African Games, which we are expecting 5,000 athletes and 2,000 officials, the facilities used for the games will be transformed into the University for Sports Development,” he said.
Dr. Asare told the Chief Imam that the games will open opportunities for the business community and enhance tourism in the country, while improving upon the existing infrastructure of the country.
“We came to seek your blessing for the games, and to highlight the importance of the games to you,” he noted.
He further noted that the Muslim community will play a pivotal role in organising the games, hence the need to involve the highest authority into the organisation of the event.
The Chief Imam, after praying for the board, lauded them for their work for the nation saying, “Organising such events brings about unity and oneness, which is good for the country.”
He revealed that his outfit is in full support of the games.
The LOC board later inspected the Fadama Astro Turf in Accra, the venue of the three-day Sallah Games.
