TEACHERS AND students of the New Asafo MA Basic School at Asokwa in Kumasi are said to be living in great danger following reports that mad men frequently invade the school to terrorize them.
Some of the lunatics reportedly look very scary, and usually enter the classrooms during teaching hours, forcing fear-stricken teachers and pupils to flee in order to prevent themselves from possible attacks.
The continuous reported invasion of classrooms by the mad men and other pressing challenges, such as lack of key amenities, are said to have contributed to a sharp decline in the school’s population in recent times.
Mr. Foster Opoku, headmaster of the school, who made the disclosure, called for immediate construction of a wall around the school to forestall a reoccurrence of the incident.
He expressed the worry when the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi, and other top officials of the assembly visited the school – which shares a boundary with the Kumasi City Mall – on an inspection tour.
Mr. Opoku also called for the introduction of the school feeding programme in the school to help attract new students, stressing that he was alarmed about the continuous spate of dropouts in the school.
Mr Osei Assibey said it is unacceptable for mad men to attack teachers and pupils whilst in school, indicating that the KMA would partner a private company to construct a wall around the school.
He stated that he was also not happy about commercial activities on the school’s premises, which he noted, could distract the teachers and the pupils, and assured that the KMA would soon solve the problem once and for all.
