John Mahama
In a recent announcement, John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), revealed that he will choose his running mate for the upcoming presidential election next year.
The decision comes in response to suggestions made by traditional authorities in Asunafo South, in the Ahafo region who recommended their Member of Parliament, Eric Opoku, for the position.
Mr. Mahama emphasized the significance of following a clear and structured procedure in selecting the most suitable individual to join him on the NDC’s ticket.
He acknowledged the importance of carefully considering the potential running mate, as their selection could significantly impact the party’s chances in the election.
While addressing the recommendations made by the traditional authorities in Asunafo South, Mahama acknowledged the merits of Eric Opoku, the Member of Parliament representing the area. However, he reiterated the necessity of adhering to a fair and transparent process in order to identify the most competent candidate.
“Our party, like custom, has processes for selecting candidates for various roles.
“The Presidential candidate, National executives, and Council of Elders meet to select a running mate.” But that procedure will begin next year. So keep praying for such a day,” Mr. Mahama said.
John Dramani Mahama’s announcement has sparked excitement and speculation within political circles as well as among NDC supporters. Many are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of his running mate, as the choice will likely shape the NDC’s campaign strategy and strengthen their bid for the presidency.
The NDC, under Mahama’s leadership, seeks to regain power after losing the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections to the incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, remains a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape and enjoys considerable support from his party’s base.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the selection of a running mate assumes crucial significance for the NDC. The chosen candidate will be expected to complement Mahama’s vision and effectively communicate the party’s policies and agenda to the electorate. Furthermore, the running mate will likely play a vital role in consolidating support from various constituencies and appealing to undecided voters.
The NDC’s decision regarding the running mate is anticipated to be a highly deliberated process, involving consultations within the party’s leadership and careful consideration of various factors, such as regional balance, experience, and electoral appeal.
Ghanaians will be closely watching the NDC’s selection process, as the party seeks to present a formidable challenge to the ruling NPP in the 2024 presidential election.
With John Dramani Mahama’s announcement, the countdown to the unveiling of his running mate has begun, marking a critical juncture in Ghana’s political landscape.
